I have made the same argument here every Thursday since July. But there is a second half of it that a blog written for organizations cannot reach.

Professional reputation is an asset. It is built slowly, over years, through deposits no one records. It is also portable. When she leaves, it leaves with her, fully formed, and arrives at whichever organization was smart enough to name it.

Most organizations respond to the professional character gap with frustration or better hiring. Both miss the point. The gap is not a people problem. It is an organizational one, and closing it starts with the organization owning that distinction.
